Embodiment of Data

Data is predominantly understood as a resource (like oil), available for human extraction, and existing independently from the bodies producing it. This is concerning because in a datafied world, disembodiment of data opens it up to possibilities of human exploitation. To account for this harm, my research on the embodiment of data builds upon feminist scholarship that foregrounds the relationship between data and bodies to show that data is an extension of our bodies, and control over data is often experienced by people as control over their bodies.

Feminist Internet

The Internet holds great promise as a democratizing enabler of social, economic, cultural and political rights. How far has this vision been actualized for women and gender minorities in the Global South? How can we envision a ‘feminist internet’? How would it be different from the Internet of today? My research attempts to unsettle the idea of the Internet and its governance as being a ‘First-World’ concern by unpacking how social, cultural, economic, political, and geographic contexts complicate one’s experience in cyberspace.
